My wife was telling me the other day that my writing style and my speaking style are completely different. This observation was very interesting to me and got me to reflecting on just what those differences are. Now, obviously, there are certain things that simply do not translate well into speech from writing, and conversational writing certainly does not lend itself well to scholarship. In my personal reflection, though, I think the thing that’s most lost in my writing is my sense of humor. Much of my communication happens with my eyes and my body language and, that being the case, much of my humor simply cannot be conveyed in written form. Long story short, if you really want to get to know me, you will not be able to do so by reading my blogs, tweets, facebook statuses, or even by listening to my comments in the classroom. Perhaps these nuances of my personality only come out in the context of fellowship and hospitality. Sorry. I’ll work on that.
